Managing Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains happen when the ligaments that surround and connect your ankle joint become injured, typically by being stretched, sometimes causing tears, due to a sudden or awkward movement. Such as rolling or twisting your ankle, causing the joint to move out of proper position. Damage from an ankle sprain can extend to tendons, cartilage, and bone if there is a fracture. It's why it's important to have any ankle sprain examined by your podiatrist. Symptoms of an Ankle Sprain

Even a mild ankle sprain can be very painful and can result in almost immediate swelling and stiffness, which can make it difficult to walk on the affected leg. You can treat a sprained ankle by resting the foot and elevating it on a pillow to reduce the inflammation. For this cause, you can also apply ice and turn to over-the-counter medication. It can take some time for the injury to heal, even if it's mild.

But it's a good idea to see your doctor if you are experiencing extreme pain or if the pain increases rather than decreases with at-home care. Also see your doctor if the swelling continues, if there is an odd shape to your ankle, or if you find it very difficult to move it.

Treatment for Ankle Sprains

Your podiatrist can perform a physical examination, as well as prescribe imaging tests, to determine the extent of your injury. Treatment can involve a variety of approaches, including adjustments, but the specific treatment will be tailored to your needs. The goals of any combination of treatments are to reduce your discomfort, to allow you to regain motion in your ankle, and to help you strengthen the joint to prevent re-injury.
