What Sports Injuries Does a Podiatrist Treat?

Podiatrists treat diseases and injuries related to the feet and ankles. Many different injuries can impede an athlete's ability to perform at their highest level.  At Podiatry Associates Northwest we treat sports injuries in Redmond, WA, and also our offices in Seattle, Bellevue, and Issaquah.

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is the large tendon that runs down the back of the lower leg and connects the calf muscles to the heel. Tendonitis occurs when it gets inflamed and irritated. It gets almost constant use when you walk, run, jump, stand on your tiptoes, and climb stairs. Injury is often the result of asking your body for too much too quickly. Your podiatrists will do an evaluation and take X-rays. Rest, ice, and patience will usually bring relief, but it can take months. Physical therapy, NSAIDs, and Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment can get you active again.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is an irritation of the plantar fascia, a ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot. It supports the arch and runs all the way to the end of the heel. Most sports put a lot of stress on the feet, especially ones with repetitive actions like dancing and running. The tissue of the fascia becomes torn and irritated, resulting in inflammation and heel pain. Our podiatrist will take X-rays to rule out other things and then may recommend Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment and orthotics. Exercise, NSAIDs, and cortisone injections are also options.

Sprained Ankle

Sprained ankles are among the most common sports injuries. It often results from sports such as basketball, tennis, football, and soccer. Conservative treatments usually work within a week or two, but if the inflammation and pain continues it may require more serious treatment. X-rays or MRIs can determine the extent of damage and a program of physical therapy can be designed to strengthen the ankle. It is rare for surgery to be necessary.

Stress fractures

Stress fractures in the feet and ankles are common sports injuries, especially among runners and those who run a lot in their sport, such as basketball players and soccer players. The key to your recovery, when you have a stress fracture, is refraining from your normal sports activities. You may require casting, depending on where the stress fracture is. X-rays and other imaging may be required for a correct diagnosis.
